A high-level review meeting is scheduled to be conducted by the Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary in response to the rising number of Olive Ridley Turtle deaths.

About Olive Ridley Turtles:

  • Named for the olive green color of their heart-shaped shell.
  • They are among the smallest and most abundant species of sea turtles, primarily found in the tropical regions of the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans.
  • Famous for their unique mass nesting behavior, known as Arribada, where thousands of females gather to lay eggs on the same beach.

Dietary Features:

  • Carnivores, primarily feeding on jellyfish, shrimp, snails, crabs, mollusks, fish, and their eggs.

Threats:

  • Turtle-unfriendly fishing practices.
  • Development and exploitation of nesting beaches for ports and tourism.

Conservation Status:

  • IUCN Red List: Vulnerable.
  • WPA, 1972: Schedule 1.
  • CITES: Appendix 1.
