The Karnataka cabinet sub-committee has recently approved the designation of four forest areas as eco-sensitive zones. These include Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary, Bankapura Wolf Sanctuary, Uttaragudda Wildlife Sanctuary, and Arsikere Bear Sanctuary.

What are Eco-Sensitive Zones (ESZ)? Eco-sensitive zones are areas with unique environmental resources that require special conservation efforts, as outlined in the National Environment Policy (2006). States can propose ESZs based on the guidelines issued by the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change in 2011.

While ESZs regulate certain activities, such as agriculture and construction, they do not completely prohibit them unless specifically stated.

Importance of ESZs:

• ESZs act as "shock absorbers" for specialized ecosystems, such as protected areas or other natural sites.
