National Health Mission (NHM)

The National Health Mission was launched by the Indian government in 2013, combining the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and the National Urban Health Mission (NUHM).

About NHM

Objective: The mission aims to achieve universal access to affordable, equitable, and quality healthcare that is responsive to people's needs.

Components and Initiatives:

• Reproductive, Maternal, Newborn, Child, and Adolescent Health (RMNCH+A): Includes programs like Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) and Janani Shishu Suraksha Karyakram (JSSK) to promote maternal and child health.
• Communicable Diseases Control: Focus on TB, malaria, leprosy, HIV/AIDS through various programs like NVBDCP and RNTCP.
• Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs): Initiatives for managing diabetes, hypertension, and cancer under NPCDCS.
• Other Areas: Urban health, strengthening the health system, ASHA program.

Implementation: State governments implement NHM with financial and technical support from the central government.

Key Achievements:

• Maternal Mortality Rate (MMR) decreased by 83% since 1990, exceeding the global decline of 45%.
• Under-5 Mortality Rate (U5MR) decreased by 75%, surpassing the global reduction of 60%.
• Successful disease control, including Kala Azar elimination and Measles-Rubella vaccination coverage of 97.98%.

Fund Sharing: The central government contributes 60%, with 40% from states (90:10 for Northeastern states).
