'Estimation and Measurement of India’s Digital Economy' Report

Released by the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology (MeitY), this report places India at the forefront of developing countries in adopting the OECD framework to assess the digital economy.

Key Findings:

  • Digital Economy Contribution: In 2022-23, it contributed 11.74% to India's national income, projected to rise to 13.42% by 2024-25.

  • Rank: India is the third-largest digitalized economy globally (State of India’s Digital Economy Report 2024).

  • Key Sectors:

    • Digitally Enabling Industries (ICT services, telecommunications): Contributed 7.83% of GVA.
    • New Digital Industries (big tech firms, digital platforms).
    • Digitalization of Traditional Sectors: Contributed an additional 2% to GVA.
  • Employment: 14.67 million workers (2.55% of the workforce) were employed in the digital economy in 2022-23.

  • Projected Growth: By 2029-30, the digital economy is expected to account for nearly one-fifth of India's national income, surpassing agriculture and manufacturing.

Key Recommendations: Improve broadband accessibility, address data gaps, and harmonize data collection practices.
