10 Years of Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
Launched in January 2015 as part of the Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao Campaign, over 4.1 crore Sukanya Samriddhi accounts have been opened as of November 2024, aiming to provide financial security and empower girls across India.
About Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana
It is a savings scheme specifically for a girl child, designed to meet her education and marriage expenses.
- Ministry: Union Ministry of Finance
- Eligibility: Accounts can be opened for a girl child until she turns 10 years old, either at a post office or commercial bank.
- Deposit Details: Minimum ₹250, Maximum ₹1.5 Lakh annually.
- Account Management: Managed by the guardian until the girl reaches 18.
- Interest Rate: 8.2%
- Withdrawal: 50% of the balance can be withdrawn for higher education at age 18.
- Premature Closure: Account can be closed early if the girl marries after turning 18.
- Maturity: The account matures after 21 years from the opening date.
Achievements:
In many villages, all eligible girls under 10 have had Sukanya Samriddhi accounts opened, making these villages complete Sukanya Samriddhi Gram.
