Rhododendron

A recent study has raised concerns about the threat to Rhododendron wattii in Nagaland, while a new orchid species has been recorded for the first time in Manipur.

About Rhododendron:

  • Overview: Rhododendron is one of the largest genera of flowering plants, with over 1,000 wild species.
  • Distribution:
    • Predominantly found in the Himalayas and Southeast Asia.
    • Present in smaller numbers across North America, Europe, the Middle East, and northeastern Australia.

Recognition:

  • Rhododendron arboreum is the national flower of Nepal, known as "Lali Gurans."
  • The pink Rhododendron is the state flower of Himachal Pradesh.
  • Rhododendrons are considered indicator species for climate change and are also used in traditional medicine.
