Melanistic Royal Bengal Tiger

Melanistic Royal Bengal Tiger

A melanistic Royal Bengal tiger was poached in the Simlipal Tiger Reserve (STR), Odisha. STR is home to the world’s only population of melanistic tigers.

About the Melanistic Royal Bengal Tiger
Also referred to as "black tigers," they are not a distinct subspecies. These tigers exhibit more black pigmentation or denser stripes due to a genetic mutation in the Transmembrane Aminopeptidase Q (Taqpep) gene. They are often called pseudo-melanistic because they are not entirely black. Melanism leads to an overproduction of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of hair, skin, and eyes.
