Four more wetlands included under the Ramsar Convention
Four additional wetlands have been designated under the Ramsar Convention, raising India’s total from 85 to 89, making it the leader in Asia and third globally. These newly recognized wetlands are located in Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, and Jharkhand. Tamil Nadu now leads the country with 20 Ramsar sites, the highest among all Indian states, while Sikkim and Jharkhand have each added their first Ramsar sites.
The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands, adopted in Ramsar (Iran) in 1971, aims to provide a framework for both national and international efforts to conserve and sustainably use wetlands. World Wetlands Day is observed on February 2nd each year.
