Cabinet extended tenure of National Commission for Safai Karamcharis(NCSK) for three years
"The Cabinet has approved the extension of the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis (NCSK) for an additional three years. Established in 1994 under the National Commission for Safai Karamcharis Act, 1993, the commission became a non-statutory body after the act lapsed in 2004 and currently operates under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment (MoSJE). Its tenure is renewed periodically through Government Resolutions.
Mandate of NCSK:
- Advise the central government on programs aimed at eliminating inequalities faced by Safai Karamcharis and other related issues.
- Assess and evaluate schemes designed for the socio-economic rehabilitation of sanitation workers.
- Under the Prohibition of Employment as Manual Scavengers and their Rehabilitation Act, 2013, NCSK monitors implementation, investigates complaints of violations, offers advice for effective execution, and takes suo-motu action for non-implementation of the act.
- Other duties include monitoring working conditions (health, safety, and wages) and reporting to the government on issues related to sanitation workers.
Challenges Faced by Sanitation Workers:
- Hazardous working conditions leading to health issues such as eczema, scaly dermatitis, and respiratory problems.
- Social stigma, as many workers come from marginalized communities, resulting in systemic exclusion and a lack of social security."
