The World Economic Forum, in partnership with Accenture, has released the Global Cybersecurity Outlook 2025 report, which emphasizes the increasing complexity of the cyber landscape and its broad implications for organizations and nations (see the infographic). The report also points out that cybercrime disrupted global economies, costing $12.5 billion in 2023.
Several factors are contributing to the growing complexity of cybersecurity:
Supply Chain Vulnerabilities: The rising complexity of supply chains and limited oversight create risks, with flaws in third-party software enabling cyberattacks to spread across the ecosystem.
Geopolitical Tensions: Conflicts lead to the development of advanced cyber strategies that threaten critical infrastructure, including energy and telecommunications.
AI-Driven Threats: Generative AI allows for the cost-effective and scalable deployment of malware, as well as sophisticated multilingual social engineering attacks aimed at manipulating individuals to gain control over computer systems.
Cyber Skills Gap: An increasing 8% skills gap leaves two-thirds of organizations unable to meet their security needs effectively.
Convergence of Cybercrime and Organized Crime: The rise of cyber-enabled fraud has drawn violent organized crime groups into the cyber domain, amplifying the scale and social impact of cybercrime.
Climate-Linked Cyber Risks: Energy grids face increased risks due to the growing reliance on evolving energy systems.
Quantum Vulnerabilities: Quantum computing presents the potential to break public-key encryption, which is essential for securing digital systems.
The report stresses that overcoming these cyber challenges requires a shift in perspective, viewing cyber resilience as a collective responsibility. Leaders must approach cybersecurity as a strategic investment to effectively counter emerging threats.
