Teesta River

The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has approved the proposal to rebuild the Teesta-III dam, located on the main Teesta River, despite concerns regarding its design and stability.

About Teesta River:

  • Origin: The Teesta River originates from Tso Lhamo Lake in North Sikkim and flows through India (West Bengal and Sikkim) and Bangladesh.
  • Tributary: It is a major right-bank tributary of the Brahmaputra River. The Rangit River is a tributary of the Teesta.
  • Course: The Teesta flows south through the Siwalik Hills, then southeast through the Sivok Khola pass into West Bengal.
  • Drains into: Originally, the Teesta emptied directly into the upper Padma River (Ganga). However, around 1787, it changed its course to flow eastward through Bangladesh, where it now joins the Jamuna River.
