Lake Victoria and Cyanobacteria Study

 Lake Victoria and Cyanobacteria Study

Researchers recently conducted a genetic survey of cyanobacteria in the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, the world’s second-largest freshwater lake after Lake Superior in the U.S. and the largest in Africa. The lake borders three countries: Tanzania, Uganda, and Kenya.

About Cyanobacteria:

Cyanobacteria, also known as blue-green algae, are photosynthetic microorganisms commonly found in aquatic environments.

  • They play a crucial role in providing nitrogen fertilizer for rice and bean cultivation.
  • Historically, cyanobacteria were essential in generating the oxygen-rich atmosphere during the Archaean and Proterozoic Eras.
  • However, cyanobacteria can also form dense, toxic blooms in both freshwater and marine environments, which can disrupt ecosystems and degrade water quality
