Recently, Kashmir Chinars have received digital protection through geo-tagging with QR codes.

About Kashmir Chinars (Platanus orientalis):

  • Native: Originally from Greece, the Kashmir Chinars are found throughout Kashmir and are commonly grown in the Eastern Himalayas. Char Chinar, an island on Dal Lake in Srinagar, is named after this tree.

Key Features:

  • The Kashmir Chinar is a large, deciduous tree that can grow up to 30 meters tall and takes about 150 years to reach its full height.
  • Known for its longevity, the tree’s leaves change color throughout the seasons, transitioning from deep green in summer to shades of blood-red, amber, and yellow in autumn.

Applications: The tree is used for medicinal purposes, its wood is utilized for making interior furniture, and its leaves are used in dye production, among other uses.
