Recently, the Inland Waterways Authority of India (IWAI) inaugurated its 6th regional office in Varanasi. Previously, IWAI operated five regional offices located in Guwahati, Patna, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, and Kolkata.

About IWAI:

• Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways.
• Origin: IWAI is a statutory body established under the Inland Waterways Authority of India Act, 1985.
• Objective: To develop and regulate inland waterways for shipping and navigation.
• Purpose: IWAI undertakes projects for the development and maintenance of Inland Water Transport (IWT) infrastructure on national waterways, funded by grants from the Ministry of Shipping.
