India is set to launch its first Human Underwater Submersible (Deep-Sea Manned Vehicle), according to the Union Minister. The initial submersible will operate at depths of up to 500 meters, with plans to eventually reach an impressive depth of 6,000 meters as part of the Deep Ocean Mission (DOM).
Earlier, India launched its first unique Manned Ocean Mission, Samudrayan, in Chennai for deep ocean exploration.
Deep Ocean Mission (DOM)
- About: Launched in 2021, DOM is a flagship program with a five-year duration.
- Nodal Ministry: Ministry of Earth Sciences.
- Part of: It is one of the nine missions under the Prime Minister’s Science, Technology, and Innovation Advisory Council (PMSTIAC).
- Objective: To unlock vast ocean resources, including critical minerals, rare metals, and undiscovered marine biodiversity.
Key Pillars of the Mission:
- Technological Development: Creating technologies for deep-sea mining and a manned submersible equipped with sensors and tools to mine polymetallic nodules. The submersible will carry three people to a depth of 6,000 meters in the Indian Ocean.
- Ocean Climate Change Advisory Services: Involving ocean observations and models to provide climate change insights.
- Biodiversity Exploration: Technological innovations aimed at the exploration and conservation of deep-sea biodiversity.
- Deep-Ocean Survey: Exploring potential sites for multi-metal hydrothermal sulphide mineralization along the Indian Ocean’s mid-ocean ridges.
- Ocean Resource Utilization: Harnessing energy and freshwater from the ocean.
- Marine Biology Station: Establishing an advanced Marine Station for Ocean Biology to foster new opportunities in ocean biology and blue biotechnology.
