F11 Bacteria
A recent study identified F11 bacteria (Labrys portucalensis) that can degrade at least three types of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS).
About F11 Bacteria
F11 is an aerobic bacterium from the Xanthobacteraceae family. It has potential applications in bioaugmentation, such as in wastewater treatment.
Bioaugmentation is the process of introducing microorganisms capable of biodegrading resistant molecules in polluted environments.
About PFAS
PFAS are toxic chemicals known for their resistance to grease, oil, water, and heat. Referred to as "forever chemicals," they are nearly indestructible.
Uses: PFAS are found in products like nonstick cookware, grease-resistant food packaging, and waterproof or firefighting clothing.
