Recently, escalating hostilities in the eastern region of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) by the non-state armed group M23 have led to significant displacement in the area.

Political Features:

  • The DRC is the second-largest country in Africa (after Algeria) and the largest in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA).
  • Land Boundaries: It shares borders with Angola, Burundi, the Central African Republic, the Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia.
  • Maritime Boundary: The country has a coastline along the Atlantic Ocean.

Geographical Features:

  • Major River: The Congo River, which is the second-longest river in the world, after the Nile.
  • Vegetation: The country is home to vast tropical forests, and the Congo Basin contains the world’s largest tropical peatlands.
  • Minerals: The DRC is rich in minerals, including cobalt, gold, copper, coal, iron ore, and lithium.
