Dark Oxygen
Dark oxygen is believed to alter our understanding of how life could potentially be sustained on other planets without direct sunlight.
About Dark Oxygen:
In July 2024, scientists discovered "dark" oxygen 13,100 feet deep in the Clarion-Clipperton Zone of the Pacific Ocean. Metallic nodules on the seafloor, rich in manganese and iron, were found to generate oxygen by splitting seawater (H2O) without the need for sunlight.
This discovery challenges the long-held belief that photosynthesis is the only source of oxygen and suggests that oxygen-rich environments might exist on other planets, possibly supporting life. Additionally, it implies that oxygen production on Earth could have occurred before photosynthesis, offering new insights into the origins of life.
