Scientists have successfully created the first adult mouse with two male parents. This breakthrough was achieved through precise gene edits targeting imprinting in embryonic stem cells (ESCs).

ESCs are pluripotent cells capable of developing into all types of somatic cells in the embryo.

Researchers focused on editing 20 imprinting genes to bypass the challenges of unisexual reproduction. Various techniques were employed, including CRISPR, frameshift mutations, gene deletions, and edits to regulatory regions.

This accomplishment highlights the potential to overcome obstacles in unisexual mammalian reproduction and could advance regenerative medicine.
