Five new industrial clusters from India have joined the Transitioning Industrial Clusters Initiative (TICI). These include the Gopalpur Industrial Park, Kakinada Cluster, Kerala Green Hydrogen Valley, Mundra Cluster, and the Mumbai Green Hydrogen Cluster.
Industrial clusters are geographically concentrated areas where interconnected industries, companies, and institutions work together to drive economic growth. A report from the World Economic Forum highlights the key role of these clusters in offering economies of scale, shared risk, and demand optimization. Additionally, they provide unique benefits based on their local context, location, and the composition of their members.
Challenges in Clean Energy Infrastructure Development:
- Green premium issue: For instance, in 2023, the cost of producing green ammonia is nearly three times higher than fossil fuel-based production.
- Fragmentation of standards, certifications, and policies for clean fuels: There are currently 34 certification schemes for hydrogen and its derivatives (such as ammonia) worldwide.
- Other challenges include a lack of strong demand, gaps in governance, and data protocols and controls.
The Ministry of Tribal Affairs is also hosting the National Conference of District Magistrates on PM JANMAN.
What is the Transitioning Industrial Clusters Initiative (TICI)?
The TICI is a World Economic Forum initiative first launched at COP26 (Glasgow, UK, 2021). Currently, it includes 33 clusters across 16 countries and five continents. It is the largest coalition of co-located companies and public institutions committed to reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
