SOLUTION

21.       Let the number be x.

Then, x – 4 = 21 /X 21 /X     X² - 4x – 21 = 0  ( X – 7 ) (X + 3) = 0     X = 7.

22.       Let the number be X. then, x + 1/X = (3 ( X – 1/x )   x² + 1 / x = 3 ( x² - 1 / X )

X² + 1 = 3X² - 3  2X² = 4   x² = 2   x = 2

23.       Let the numbers be a and b. then, ab = 17   a = 1 and b = 17.

So, 1 / a² + 1 /b² = a² + b² / a² b² = 1² + (17)² / (1 x 17)² = 290 / 289.

24.       Let the number be x. then,

4 ½ ( X + 2 ½ ) + 3 / 1  1/5 = 25       9/2 ( X + 5/2 ) + 3 / 6/5 = 25

9x / 2 + 45 / 4 + (3 = 25 x 6 / 5 = 30       9X / 2 =30 – 57 / 4      9x / 2 = 63 / 4

X =(63 / 4 x 2/9 ) = 7/ 2 = 3 1/2

25.       Let the numbers be 4X, 5x and 6x. Then, 4x + 5X + 6x / 3      9x / 2   = 63 / 4.

Largest number = 6x = 30.
