"Since 2009, more than 15,000 Indian migrants have been deported from the U.S., according to the Minister of External Affairs. Many migrants take the 'dunki routes' (also known as 'donkey routes') to reach the U.S., traveling through Latin American countries. Nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Guyana offer visas on arrival for Indian citizens, while Brazil and Venezuela provide tourist visas with ease. The migrant's journey is often shaped by human trafficking networks associated with their agents.

Reasons for Illegal Migration:

• Better Opportunities: Low wages in India drive migrants to seek higher-paying jobs in the U.S.
• Limited Legal Routes: Slow and uncertain visa processing forces people to pursue illegal routes.
• Success Culture: In communities like the Patels in Gujarat, societal pressures lead families to sell land or take loans to fund migration.

Consequences of Such Migration: Migrants face risks like robbery, assault, and even rape, with many crimes going unreported. The journey typically takes 8-10 days if successful, but the bodies of those who die during the journey are often unable to be repatriated. The strong demand for migration has fueled a booming human smuggling industry. Smuggling agents charge exorbitant fees, promising jobs and legal status."
