Inland Mangrove of Guneri Designated as Gujarat's First Biodiversity Heritage Site

Gujarat has officially declared the Inland Mangrove of Guneri in Kutch district as a Biodiversity Heritage Site (BHS), marking the state's first such designation. This declaration follows the provisions of the Biodiversity Act, 2002.

About the Inland Mangrove of Guneri:

  • The Guneri mangroves are located 45 km inland from the Arabian Sea and 4 km from Kori Creek, forming a unique inland ecosystem.
  • Unlike traditional mangrove ecosystems, this site does not experience tidal water inflows and lacks the typical muddy or swampy conditions.
  • The Guneri mangroves are among only eight such ecosystems in the world.
  • The area is home to around 20 migratory and 25 resident bird species.
