Body Mass Index (BMI)

Body Mass Index (BMI)

Endocrinologists from the Diabetes Foundation India have updated the country's obesity guidelines after 15 years, replacing the term "overweight" with Obesity Grades I and II. The previous 2009 guidelines were based solely on BMI criteria.

About BMI
BMI is a statistical measure used to assess a person’s healthy weight range relative to their height. It is calculated by dividing a person’s weight (in kilograms) by the square of their height (in meters).

Limitations:

  • It does not distinguish between lean body mass and fat mass, nor does it account for gender differences despite physiological variations.
  • It does not measure how body fat is distributed.
