Bird Flu (Avian Influenza)

Recently, a second genotype (genotype D1.1) of the bird flu virus has been detected in dairy cattle in the U.S. Previously, all bird flu detections in dairy cattle had involved genotype B3.13.

About Bird Flu:

  • Cause: It is caused by the Avian Influenza Type A Virus.
  • Subtypes: The virus is classified into subtypes based on two proteins on its surface: Hemagglutinin (HA) and Neuraminidase (NA).
  • Carriers and Transmission: Migratory wild birds, particularly waterfowl, are natural reservoirs of avian influenza viruses.
  • Transmission to Humans: Certain subtypes of the virus, such as H5N1, can infect humans, leading to severe respiratory illnesses.
  • Symptoms: Symptoms of bird flu include fever, fatigue, cough, sore throat, and muscle aches
