A new study, titled “Governance and Resilience as Entry Points for Transforming Food Systems in Countdown to 2030,” offers a comprehensive analysis of food systems transformation. Conducted by the Food Systems Countdown Initiative in collaboration with global experts and organizations like FAO and the Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition, the study tracks 42 global food system indicators across five key themes:
- Diets, nutrition, and health
- Environment, natural resources, and production
- Livelihoods, poverty, and equity
- Resilience
- Governance
Key Findings:
- Positive Trends: 20 indicators show improvement, such as increased access to safe water, greater availability of vegetables, and enhanced conservation of plant and animal genetic resources.
- Significant Declines: 7 indicators have worsened, including food price volatility, declining government accountability, and reduced civil society participation.
- No Change (Undesirable): 15 indicators remain stagnant, including sales of ultra-processed foods, food system emissions, and agricultural water withdrawal.
The study highlights that governance indicators (e.g., public access to information) and resilience indicators (e.g., food price volatility) are crucial leverage points for driving the transformation of food systems.

A food system includes all actors and their interconnected activities involved in the production, processing, distribution, consumption, and disposal of food products originating from agriculture, forestry, or fisheries.
