Indore and Udaipur have been added to the list of 31 Wetland Accredited Cities worldwide. These two cities are the first from India to achieve global accreditation under the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands.
Indore: Sirpur Lake, a Ramsar Site, is recognized for its role in waterbird congregation and is being developed as a bird sanctuary.
Udaipur: The city is surrounded by five major wetlands: Pichola, Fateh Sagar, Rang Sagar, Swaroop Sagar, and Doodh Talai.
About Wetland City Accreditation (WCA)
The WCA is a voluntary system that offers cities an opportunity to gain international recognition for their efforts in valuing and conserving natural or human-made wetlands.
It was established at COP12 of the Ramsar Convention in Uruguay in 2015.
The accreditation is valid for six years, after which it must be renewed, provided the city continues to meet the six required criteria (refer to image).
Importance of WCA:
- It promotes the conservation and wise use of urban and peri-urban wetlands, ensuring sustainable socio-economic benefits for local communities.
- It encourages cities near and reliant on wetlands—especially Wetlands of International Importance—to strengthen their positive relationships with these vital ecosystems.
- It supports the implementation of the Amrit Dharohar initiative by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC).
