Election Commission of India (ECI) Marks 75 Years of Establishment

The Election Commission of India (ECI) was established on January 25, 1950, and this day is celebrated as National Voters' Day.

About ECI

• Nature: ECI is a permanent Constitutional body.
• Authority: Under Article 324, the ECI is entrusted with the responsibility of overseeing and controlling elections to Parliament, State Legislatures, and the offices of the President and Vice-President.
• Composition: The ECI consists of one Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and other Election Commissioners (ECs), as determined by the President. Currently, the Commission includes one CEC and two ECs.
• Appointment: The President appoints the CEC and ECs.
• Tenure: They serve for 6 years or until they reach the age of 65, whichever comes first.
• Status, Salary, and Perks: The CEC and ECs receive the same status, salary, and perks as the judges of the Supreme Court of India.
• Removal: The CEC can only be removed in a manner and on grounds similar to that of a Supreme Court judge.

Key Achievements of ECI

• Successful Elections: The ECI has successfully conducted 18 Lok Sabha elections and over 400 State Legislative Assembly elections.
• Elector Registration: The Commission has registered 100 crore electors, marking a significant milestone in strengthening India's democracy.
• Improved Gender Ratio: The gender ratio of registered voters has improved to 948 women per 1,000 men in 2024, up from 928 in 2019.
• Tackling Criminalization of Politics: The ECI has introduced measures to ensure that candidates with pending criminal cases disclose their details to the public.
• Various Initiatives: ECI has implemented programs like Systematic Voters' Education & Electoral Participation (SVEEP) to educate voters, and launched the SAKSHAM app to facilitate voting for Persons with Disabilities (PwDs).
